Luxury Golf Experience at Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany

Imagine playing golf on a private course in Tuscany, then walking back to your suite on an 800-year-old estate. The vineyards outside your window produce some of Italy’s most celebrated wines. Dinner is Michelin-starred. The landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is not a fantasy itinerary. This is Castiglion del Bosco, a Rosewood Hotel.

The estate covers 5,000 acres in the Val d’Orcia. This is where championship golf meets 800 years of Tuscan history. Brunello di Montalcino wine and Michelin-starred dining exist on the same estate. For the discerning golfer, there is nowhere quite like this in Europe.

Travel + Leisure named it the world’s number one hotel in 2022. Golf World ranked it the leading resort in its Top 100 Continental Europe list. The editor awarded it a perfect 20 out of 20 for accommodation. It sits quietly between Montalcino and Buonconvento, removed from the world outside its gates.

At Aventures D’Or, we book this estate through the Rosewood Elite program. Our clients arrive with meaningful benefits and direct access to advisors from the very first inquiry.

One of Italy’s most exclusive private golf clubs

Italy's Only Private Luxury Golf Club

The golf alone would justify the journey.

The 18-hole championship course consistently ranks among Italy’s top courses. It is also one of the finest private courses in Europe. It is the only Continental European design by British Open Champion Tom Weiskopf. Notably, Weiskopf drew his inspiration directly from the landscape. He worked with cypress ridgelines, elevation changes, and natural water features. The result is a course that, in his own words, looks as if it has been there for 100 years.

The 13th hole stretches to 685 yards, one of the longest par 5s in Europe. The course opened in 2012, making it one of the youngest top-ranked courses in European golf. That is a remarkable achievement for a layout barely a decade old.

What makes access here genuinely rare is simple. The Club is reserved for members and resident hotel guests only. There is no public tee time. There is no day visitor option. The only way to play is to stay.

Weiskopf also created a 19th hole, known as the Brunello Hole. It is a short finishing challenge for members and guests. The prize is a magnum of Brunello. It is a detail that says everything about the spirit of this place.

The Estate, the Borgo, and the Suites

A luxury suite at the estate.

The 800-year-old estate includes ancient castle ruins and a medieval church. At its heart is the Borgo, a historic village that now forms the center of the resort. Walking through the Borgo is not walking through a hotel. It is walking through a living piece of Tuscan history. The quiet luxury here does not announce itself.

Castiglion del Bosco offers 42 suites with heritage features and antique furnishings. Local textiles and artisanal accessories complete each space. Beyond the suites, 11 luxury Tuscan villas dot the landscape. Each was created from a restored 17th or 18th-century farmhouse. All feature heated pools, terraces, pergolas, and gardens.

From virtually every room and terrace, the view stretches across the Val d’Orcia. The rolling hills, the cypress rows, the vineyards toward the horizon. It is the landscape that has inspired poets and painters for centuries. Here, it is simply the view from your suite.

Dining: Michelin Stars and the Kitchen Garden

Fine dining at Castiglion del Bosco

The resort features two outstanding restaurants and an organic kitchen garden. Michelin-starred Ristorante Campo del Drago offers an epicurean journey through Tuscany’s food culture. Osteria La Canonica delivers trattoria-style dining on a shaded veranda overlooking the valley.

The Tuscany Golf Experience package includes daily lunch for two at Osteria La Canonica. The rhythm of a day here is beautifully simple. Tee off in the morning at the Val d’Orcia. Lunch under the veranda with local wine. An afternoon at the spa or wandering the estate. Dinner beneath Michelin stars. Begin again.

Wine: Brunello di Montalcino on the Estate

Brunello di Montalcino vineyards.

The estate’s vineyards cover 62 hectares planted solely with Sangiovese. This is the grape behind the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino wines. In fact, this wine is not from a region nearby. It is grown on the same land where you sleep, play, and dine.

Resident guests have access to wine tastings and vineyard experiences. Members of The Club are also invited to the annual wine harvest each autumn. It is one of the most immersive wine experiences in Tuscany.

For the traveler who loves both luxury golf and fine wine, there is nowhere else in Europe quite like this.

The Spa: Rooted in Tuscan Tradition

The spa at Castiglion del Bosco

The Spa at Castiglion del Bosco is housed in the estate’s former wine cellars. It sits at the heart of the Borgo, surrounded by earth tones and natural hues. The setting alone is worth the visit.

Treatments draw on the organic ingredients, herbs, and traditions of Tuscany itself. The signature body treatment partner is Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. This celebrated Florentine apothecary was founded in 1612. Facial care is handled by EviDenS de Beauté. Together, they deliver treatments that feel rooted in this landscape.

Treatments range from herb-infused body wraps and olive oil rituals to customized massages and restorative facials. Facilities include a sauna, steam bath, relaxation area, and a lush private garden. In-suite and in-villa treatments are also available for those who prefer total privacy.

After a morning on the course, an afternoon here is the perfect way to end the day.

Beyond Luxury Golf: The Full Estate Experience

The pool at Castiglion del Bosco.

The estate extends far beyond the course. There is more than enough here to fill a week without ever leaving the estate. For non-golfing companions, there is so much on offer that no one ever feels like a passenger on someone else’s trip.

The Infinity Pool

The heated panoramic infinity pool sits above the Borgo with sweeping views over the hilltops of Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia. A poolside bar keeps things effortless. It is the kind of setting where an afternoon disappears without a single regret.

Sports and Fitness

Tennis courts and bowling greens offer a relaxed, social experience. Clay shooting is available for those who want something more spirited in the open countryside. A fitness center with yoga, Pilates, and personal training rounds out the offering for guests who want to stay active.

Outdoor Activities and Nature

The estate sits along the historic Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route that has crossed this landscape for centuries. Guests can walk sections of this storied path directly from the property. Guided nature hikes wind through forests and vineyards. Bike excursions are available on road bikes, mountain bikes, and vintage bicycles. Maremma horses lead guests through riding trails that reach deep into the Val d’Orcia. Every route offers a different perspective on this extraordinary landscape.

Farm Experiences and Truffle Hunting

The estate’s working farms are open to guests. Guided tours take visitors through the organic farm, the olive groves, and the truffle grounds. Truffle hunting here is a genuine hands-on experience, not a staged demonstration. For food lovers, these excursions add a layer to the stay that no restaurant visit could replicate. Hot air balloon tours over the Val d’Orcia are also available. It is a breathtaking way to see the estate from above.

The Cooking School and Kitchen Garden

The cooking school is housed in the estate’s old priest’s house at the heart of the Borgo. The organic kitchen garden supplies much of what goes into the curriculum and into the restaurants. Guests learn from the seasons, the soil, and the culinary traditions that have defined this region for generations.

Taken together, these experiences make Castiglion del Bosco something far more than a luxury golf destination. It is a place where every guest, golfer or not, finds something that feels made for them.
